These six checks connect the product code to the liquid, liner profile, interfaces, installation method and evidence required for project acceptance.

Define the barrier duty

Confirm whether the GCL is the mineral barrier, part of a composite liner or an integral PE-laminated system.

Select the construction

Choose the exact DNW, AS, CL, CLT or KGCL construction. Family names alone are not sufficient for specification or supply.

Check the liquid chemistry

Fresh-water guidance does not transfer to saline, mining or industrial liquids. Kontain can coordinate compatibility testing with representative site liquids.

Verify slopes and interfaces

Use the actual cover soil and adjacent geosynthetics. A textured laminate can improve one interface, but all potential slip planes require review.

Set the installation details

Panel orientation, overlaps, penetrations, hydration, cover and traffic controls must match the selected product and project drawings.

Confirm supply evidence

Kontain confirms the TDS revision, roll schedule, certificate of analysis, traceability and agreed project conformance testing before order release.

The lower panel combines a 300 mm factory-unlaminated receiver overlap, a 500 mm powder zone at 400 g/lineal m (800 g/m²) and three lower-panel release/locking cuts beneath continuous upper-panel PE.

KGCL-L FACTORY LONGITUDINAL OVERLAP

500 mm embedded powder zone. Three lower-panel cuts.

The lower panel is mechanically impregnated with powdered sodium bentonite across a 500 mm factory zone at 400 g per lineal metre (800 g/m²). The zone covers the full 300 mm unlaminated receiver overlap and extends 200 mm inboard beneath the lower-panel laminate. The powder is embedded within the fibres and core—not applied as a loose surface treatment—while the GCL core remains granular.

    Upper woven to lower nonwoven

    The fully laminated upper edge is placed so its woven underside contacts the exposed lower-panel nonwoven.

    Controlled factory quantity

    The 500 mm zone is applied at 400 g/lineal m—equivalent to 800 g/m² across that width.

    Three lower-panel cuts

    When hydrated and confined, embedded powder and granular core bentonite migrate upward through the lower receiver layer to the contact interface.

  4. 04
    Continuous upper PE

    No site powder is added at a compliant factory longitudinal seam. At transverse or cut seams, powder is mandatory wherever the lower laminate remains.

This Kontain production detail combines a wider embedded powder reservoir, direct GCL contact and three lower-panel migration paths. The same mechanism can be specified for Kontain unlaminated, coated and laminated GCL families, subject to the product-specific TDS, manufacturing controls and project approval.

Use the current product-specific KGCL TDS, installation guide, order certificate and agreed conformance plan. CETCO product values, seam details and installation instructions are not transferred to KGCL supply.

The CETCO CL/CLT guide provides useful fresh-water pond evidence. Kontain applies it as product-specific background and confirms the project tests needed for Australian design.

01 · OVERLAPPED SEAMS

Seam performance was measured, not assumed.

CETCO reports large-scale BENTOMAT CL testing at 207, 413 and 620 kPa hydraulic pressure. The guide corrects laboratory seam length to field seam density. Appendix A gives 4.05 × 10⁻¹⁰ m³/m²/s total flow at the 207 kPa test point; Section 2.3.6 uses 4.17 × 10⁻¹⁰ m³/m²/s as its design value.

02 · VENEER STABILITY

Texturing is selected by the critical interface.

The guide reports indicative average peak/residual angles of 25°/23° for soil against smooth CL geofilm and 32°/25° against textured CLT membrane at low normal stress. Actual soils and interfaces must be tested.

CLT is not an automatic passInternal shear, the opposite interface, rapid drawdown, anchorage and toe conditions still govern.

Weather and hydration

Do not install in standing water or rain. Deploy only what can be covered; do not leave uncovered overnight.

Subgrade and traffic

Use an approved firm, smooth subgrade without abrupt changes, voids, standing water or damaging protrusions. Equipment controls are product and method specific.

Seams and details

Follow the CETCO product/detail schedule for longitudinal and end overlaps, supplemental bentonite, penetrations and patches. High-head CL/CLT details differ.

Cover and confinement

Place cover without dragging or tensile loading. The guide uses at least 300 mm final cover and maintains cover between equipment and the GCL.

PRELIMINARY VENEER STABILITY CHECK

Check whether a smooth or
textured laminate should be assessed.

This simplified infinite-slope calculation compares slope demand with an entered interface friction angle. Use it to decide whether BENTOMAT CLT100 and project-specific shear testing should be considered—not as a final design.
