Drainage and geosynthetics for sports fields.

Plan the playing-surface profile, drainage outlet and water-storage system together. Kontain supplies specified geotextiles, geogrids, drainage composites and M2025 tanks for sports-field construction and upgrades.

Natural-turf ovals, school grounds and golf facilities

Start with the rootzone and drainage designer’s profile. Soil grading, permeability, drain spacing and outlet levels determine whether a geotextile or geocomposite is appropriate. A blanket fabric layer should not be added beneath turf without checking the soil and hydraulic interfaces.

Synthetic sports surfaces and base construction

A designed synthetic-field base may use a nonwoven separation layer, stabilised aggregate and a drainage system connected to the nominated outlet. The turf-system supplier and project designer determine the complete profile, including any shockpad and performance requirements.

  • Select filter properties for the adjacent soil and drainage aggregate.
  • Review construction traffic, compaction and installation survivability.
  • Use liners only where the design requires a sealed profile.

Underground storage for detention or irrigation reuse

M2025 tanks can be configured for controlled stormwater discharge or retained irrigation water. Detention storage and usable irrigation storage are separate design requirements: the water balance, treatment, pumps, outlet controls and maintenance access need to work together.

  • Storage generally starts at approximately 100 m³ under Kontain’s supply model.
  • Check access for maintenance and the loads from mowing, construction and service vehicles.
  • Confirm groundwater, flotation, structural cover and the final layout with the project engineer.

Practical questions

Can drainage geocomposites replace the specified granular layer?

Only after the designer reviews flow under the project load and gradient, filter compatibility, outlet continuity and construction requirements. Published index flow is not the site design flow.

Can irrigation storage also meet the on-site detention (OSD) requirement?

Potentially, if the hydraulic design reserves the necessary detention volume and controls its availability. Do not count the same volume twice without the designer’s water-balance and discharge assessment.
