Research overview

A validated three-dimensional finite-element model compared one- and two-layer geogrid arrangements with a geocell beneath railway ballast over soft clay. The model predicts lower settlement and lateral spreading with reinforcement, with the simulated geocell outperforming the modelled geogrid layouts; conclusions depend on the adopted material models, interface assumptions and geometry rather than new field trials.
