Abattoir wastewater pond dewatering

A Queensland wastewater pond sludge project using geotextile dewatering containers to reduce wet volume and produce stackable material for handling and disposal.

01 · The constraint

What the project had to manage.

The wastewater treatment ponds held approximately 24,000 m³ of accumulated sludge in situ. The material needed to be removed so the ponds could be returned to service, while the released water and retained solids still had to be managed on the site.

02 · The response

How the technical basis was approached.

Geotextile dewatering containers were deployed on a lined operating pad. Sludge was pumped into the containers, filtrate was managed through the pad system and solids were retained for continued consolidation before handling.

03 · The known outcome

What can—and cannot—be taken from it.

The material consolidated to approximately 8,000 m³ of stackable cake—about one-third of the original wet volume. That project result is specific to the sludge, treatment response, filling process and consolidation time; it is not a generic reduction factor for other waste streams.
