HDL-GCL 020 · TECHNICAL DATA

Kontain Heavy Duty Laminated GCL 020

Revision H · 3 November 2026

Kontain HDL-GCL combines a bonded polyethylene surface with a reinforced, needle-punched clay liner. Both grades use natural sodium bentonite powder with polymer modification, held between a nonwoven cover and a woven/nonwoven composite carrier.

0.20 mm LDPE film; specified dry bentonite mass ≥4,000 g/m² excluding polymer and PE-to-nonwoven peel ≥300 N/m in bonded areas.

Technical data.

GCL reference properties are not certified test results for the finished powder/polymer laminate. Construction quantities and laminate peel are specified requirements. Confirm the order specification and test evidence for project acceptance. Applicable GCL test methods follow GRI-GCL3 Revision 5 (21 November 2019); this is not a claim of GRI-GCL3 compliance. The PE-to-nonwoven peel requirement applies to bonded areas, excluding loose edge zones. ASTM D5890 applies to the unmodified natural sodium bentonite; modified-bentonite swell values are separate specified requirements.

Selection and installation.

The ASTM D5084 conductivity, EN ISO 12236 puncture, ASTM D6243 shear and adapted PE/nonwoven peel properties are supplementary to GRI-GCL3 Table 1. GCL3 hydraulic criteria for geotextile-related GCLs are not whole-laminate criteria. Peak shear is not a design residual strength. The PE film is specified by resin type and nominal thickness; GM13/GM17 compliance is not claimed. Use a project-approved detail for end laps and repairs that maintains direct GCL contact and PE coverage. Do not strip bonded film. Extrusion sealing is limited to HDL-GCL 050. Use a qualified procedure for the 0.50 mm LLDPE film, filler and laminated assembly. Do not extrusion-seal HDL-GCL 020. Neither grade is wedge weldable. Unsealed PE overlaps rely on the GCL joint beneath them; the film overlap alone is not a watertight seam.

Common rolls are 5 m × 30 m (150 m² gross). Custom dimensions, bentonite masses and plastic or steel cores are available by order. Confirm gross roll mass and clear core bore before lifting.

Provide the liner section, contact-soil grading and chemistry, liquid analysis, slope, loading, installation method and delivery requirements.
