Project-first geosynthetic selection: what to define before choosing a product

A practical framework for moving from the ground, load, water and construction problem to the right geosynthetic function, evidence and supply pathway.

Scope note. This article provides practical selection guidance for early project discussions. It does not replace project-specific investigation, testing, design, certification or the appointed project team.

Start with the mechanism, not the catalogue grade

A product name is not a design brief. The useful starting point is the problem the system must control: separation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement, stabilisation, containment, protection or dewatering.

Several products may appear to serve the same application while relying on different mechanisms. A pavement grid that improves aggregate confinement is not selected on the same basis as a high-strength woven carrying a defined tensile load. Treating them as interchangeable because both are called reinforcement creates avoidable technical and commercial risk.

Define the inputs that materially change the answer

The first review does not need a perfect design package. It does need enough information to identify the controlling condition and the gaps that still matter.

  • Ground: subgrade strength, variability, saturation, contamination and expected preparation.
  • Loads: vehicle or equipment type, contact pressure, traffic repetitions and design life.
  • Water: flow direction, filtration demand, drainage path, chemical exposure and containment duty.
  • Geometry: platform thickness, slopes, wall height, available footprint, interfaces and penetrations.
  • Construction: aggregate grading, plant, placement sequence, survivability risk, access and programme.
  • Evidence: specified standards, project acceptance criteria, testing basis and certification requirements.

Match the function to a product family

Once the controlling function is clear, the product family becomes easier to screen. Nonwoven geotextiles commonly address separation, filtration, protection and drainage. Road wovens provide robust separation and tensile contribution. Pavement geogrids focus on aggregate interlock and confinement, while structural PET wovens and uniaxial grids carry defined long-term tensile loads.

For containment and water management, the selection may move to geosynthetic clay liners, drainage geonets or geocomposites, modular stormwater systems or geobag dewatering. The correct choice depends on the whole system and its interfaces rather than a single headline property.

Set the evidence gate before discussing price

Price comparisons only mean something when the offered products are being assessed against the same technical basis. Confirm the test method, direction, specimen condition, durability basis and reduction factors behind each value. For critical interfaces or project-specific exposure, published catalogue data may be only the first screening step.

A transparent offer should identify which values are published, which are assumed, what still needs verification and whether project-specific testing is required. That makes departures visible before supply, not during construction.

Include manufacture and delivery in the selection

Roll width, length, overlaps, ports, panels, container utilisation and site handling can materially alter installed cost. A technically acceptable product that arrives in an inefficient format can create unnecessary seams, handling time, waste and programme pressure.

Project-direct supply works best when technical selection and logistics are developed together. Confirm the product basis, quantities, manufacturing format, minimum order, documentation and delivery sequence as one coordinated package.

A practical way to start

Send the drawing, specification, quantity, programme, site photograph or the core ground, water, load and volume inputs that are available. A useful first response should map the problem to likely product systems, identify missing information and separate early feasibility from final design responsibility.
